Since May 2012, Dr. Ed Glynn has served HCA Physician Services Group as chief medical information officer (CMIO). As CMIO, Dr. Glynn uses his extensive experience in health information technology and clinical informatics to advance the development of integrated electronic health records (EHR), patient portals, and health information exchanges. Under Dr. Glynn’s leadership, this evolution to a more integrated network enables the enterprise to provide modern patient-centric care that delivers on quality and value. HCA Physician Services Group employs and/or manages 5,094 physicians and providers, 4,490 physicians and providers in joint-ventures, 1,058 physician practices, 109 urgent care centers, and numerous graduate medical education and hospital-based programs that support HCA Healthcare’s network of 177 hospitals and 119 surgery centers located across 20 states and the United Kingdom.
Dr. Glynn is a Fellow of the American Board of Family Medicine, and in 2015 graduated with a Healthcare MBA from Belmont University. He received his Medical Degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School and completed his residency training at St. Anthony’s, Oklahoma City. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from St. John’s University in Spanish Literature.
In his immediate past position, Dr. Glynn held the title of Medical Director of Ambulatory Informatics at Bon Secours Health System Inc., a health system comprised of 5 regions, including New York, Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky and South Carolina, where he served from 2006. His duties there included clinical practice along with being the Medical Director of nine (9) RediClinics throughout the greater Richmond area and Director of the Bon Secours Southside medical clinics. Dr. Glynn’s medical career began in rural North Carolina where he covered hospitalist duties, nursing homes, hospice, rural clinics, and served as a county medical examiner. In 2009, Dr. Glynn spoke on the benefits of EHR at a press conference with then US Secretary of Health and Human Services, Michael Leavitt, and former Governor Tim Kaine. Dr. Glynn has also spoken at conferences concerning Health IT sponsored by Epic, RTI, HIMSS and the World Health Innovation and Technology Congress. In 2015, Dr. Glynn was invited to speak at a healthcare conference at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. In 2016, he participated in the KLAS Interoperability Measurement Advisory Team (IMAT) whose primary goal is to formulate a manner to measure vendor success with clinical end user’s experience of the availability of clinical information within the electronic health record.
