Dr. van Zyl is the Medical Director of Patient Care Pathways and has been a practicing Hospitalist at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee since 2004. She has facilitated the design and implementation of over 400 Patient Care Pathways since 2013. Her vision is to design a healthcare system that empowers the entire healthcare team to provide patient and family centered care throughout the continuum of care. She is passionate about bringing Project Management, LEAN methodologies and meaningful data and analytics to the practice of medicine. She is currently finishing her Physician Executive MBA at the Haslam College of Business in Knoxville, Tennessee, with an expected graduation date of December 2018.
Serving as a Physician Champion and an assistant to the CMIO, she is keenly interested in empowering physicians and care providers to maintain fluent practice and consistent quality care during implementations of the electronic medical record. Dr. van Zyl continues to fight for physicians’ ability to advocate for their patients and preserve the sanctity of medicine.
Dr. van Zyl is a Fulbright scholar and has studied in multiple countries including Ireland, Germany, East Germany, France and the Caribbean. In her spare time she enjoys family time with her husband and son, including soccer games, swimming, flying, international travel and medical mission trips.
