W07 - The Clinical Guide to Trauma-Informed Care: Modifying the Therapeutic Approach (1. 5 CE)
Date & Time
Friday, March 2, 2018, 1:30 PM - 3:00 PM
Andrea Barthwell
Description
Trauma can take many forms: impersonal, interpersonal, identity, community, or complex and recurring. The earlier the experience and the more intense or pervasive and long-standing the incident, the more likely it is to be associated with increased risk of substance use and dependence. As individuals enter recovery-focused treatment, clinicians are finding it important to identify, intervene on and treat the trauma, as well as its related symptoms and diagnoses. Without treatment, underlying problems are likely to be associated with high rates of relapse and symptomology that undermines an individual’s desire to maintain recovery and build on the gains made in treatment.

Andrea G Barthwell, MD, DFASAM, will describe the principles of treatment and contrast them with the principles of trauma-informed care. She will discuss why clinicians are finding it important to initiate care for trauma as an antecedent to SUD early in recovery. She will assist participants in a review and evaluation of techniques used in the treatment of SUD, and help them identify how to extend services to address trauma and its consequences. She will introduce participants to the methods used in adolescence and adulthood that address trauma and help identify how to modify treatment systems to be more responsive to individuals with trauma.

Upon completion of this session, attendees will be able to:
  • Explain the principles of treatment of SUD and trauma
  • Name the behavioral therapies useful in addressing symptoms of heightened stress for adolescents and those useful in the care of adults
  • Compare the purpose of medication-assisted treatments to abstinence-based treatments of opioid use disorder (OUD) and those useful in mitigating symptoms of stress and distress
  • Recommend strategies to patients with SUD to assist them in their selection of a modality of care that will be trauma-informed.
