Dr. Stephen T. Lawless serves as Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer of Nemours Children’s Health System. He is responsible for quality and safety, research, academic affairs, clinical risk management and the office of human subject protection. A member of the Nemours Executive Team, he oversees Nemourswide quality and safety (patient, environmental and associate), Risk Management, Clinical Peer Review, Infection Control, Clinical Outcomes and the Nemours Clinical Management Program (NCMP). Dr Lawless uses Nemours' combined technologies, and knowledge to make systems simpler and error-free, whether those systems are used for business or healing. He is also a Professor of Pediatrics at Thomas Jefferson University and a Staff Critical Care Physician in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children.

Dr. Lawless holds certifications in pediatrics from the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) and the sub-board: Pediatric Critical Care of the ABP and is a Fellow in the American College of Critical Care Medicine. He is known as an international expert in the field of quality and safety. He has authored numerous manuscripts and book chapters and also serves on multiple journal editorial boards. He represents Nemours with the National Quality Forum and has presented at numerous national and government-sponsored forums. He has also received numerous awards such as being included in Best Doctors in America®.

Dr. Lawless has assisted with many quality and safety initiatives nationally and throughout Nemours, many of which are receiving national prominence and adaptation. He has authored numerous publications and has spoken nationally on a range of subjects, primarily focusing on aspects of quality improvement and safety in medical care especially as the electronic medical record and other technologies impact it. He has also provided extraordinary leadership to spearhead the first ever collaboration of the America Academy of pediatrics, the Children’s’ Hospital Association and the American Board of pediatrics to develop national pediatric quality and safety measures that were adopted by the Joint Commission ORYX initiative to support Joint Commission accredited organizations in their quality improvement efforts.

He was born in Hackensack, N.J. He earned his bachelor's degree in biology from Fordham University in Bronx, N.Y., and his medical degree from UMDNJ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He completed a pediatric residency and Chief Residency at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children and a pediatric critical care fellowship at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. He subsequently earned a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from the Wharton School of Business of the University of Pennsylvania. He joined Nemours in 1990.

He lives in Hockessin, Del., with his wife, Dr. Kathy Riley-Lawless, PhD who is an Associate Professor of Nursing at the University of Delaware. They have four children, Megan, Kelly, Casey and Daniel. Away from the office, he watches 1950’s style B-grade science fiction movies, relaxes by jogging and is a diehard Yankees (not Red Sox) fan.
