Jason D. Kirby, MBA, DO, is the medical director for CleanSlate Centers and is a practicing addiction medicine specialist in the north hills of Pittsburgh. He Is board certified in family medicine by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians and completed his internship and residency training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He recently earned a master's degree in business administration from Point Park University where he has an academic appointment as assistant professor of healthcare administration. He Is a member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, and the American Osteopathic Association.
This session will introduce the audience to medication assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid and alcohol use disorders and its role in recovery. We will cover the national, state and local prevalence of the opioid crisis and the clinical peer-reviewed evidence for pharmacologic methods. The session will also provide an introduction of the FDA-approved medications, outcomes evidence and how to incorporate these pharmacologic therapies into a recovery plan. Additionally, we will analyze special populations including opioid and alcohol use disorders in pregnant women and patients with chronic pain. Attendees will review the updated evidence-based MAT guidelines from the American Society of Addiction Medicine and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
Upon completion of this session, attendees will be able to:
- Discuss how implementation of medication assisted treatment (MAT) works in conjunction with psycho-social support and behavioral modification in a complete recovery program.
- Summarize the clinical efficacy of MAT.
- List the disorders approved for MAT and identify three FDA approved medications.
