Traditionally most health care organizations have been consumers of innovative technologies in the market, not producers. However, as the role of health systems change, many are building the capabilities to develop and potentially commercialize their own unique solutions. The process of assessing and selecting externally developed innovations at scale is challenging, time consuming, and often haphazard for healthcare organizations; these struggles in creating a successful external innovation process provide little incentive for organizations to take the additional step in producing innovations of their own. Michael Schmidt , managing director, strategic innovations will share Orlando Health's progress on this journey to create an internal innovation competency and culture, with their Foundry program, as a case example.

There are many mobile applications available today to assist healthcare consumers with tracking and monitoring their health data. However, this often necessitates managing multiple applications simultaneously. What if patients were able to interact with a single mobile application customized for multiple disease conditions and seamlessly integrated with a patient’s health record? What if patients could receive just-in-time guidance, such as medication reminders, symptom tracking and health education, to help them manage their conditions? These are the primary goals that drove the creation of an Interactive Care Plan (ICP) at Mayo Clinic. This session will outline lessons learned, best practices and optimal steps and processes required for replication and scalability of an ICP initiative within a healthcare organization.

Attendees will learn:

  • Design processes and structures to support the design and implementation of a digital health management application within a healthcare organization
  • Assemble and engage a multidisciplinary team with the goal of translating clinical expertise into an interactive tool to promote continuity of care and patient-provider collaboration
  • Describe challenges and lessons learned for creating a health guidance application for use in multiple clinical areas

Have you wanted to create consistent patient and plan member consumer experiences? Or provide opportunities to lower the cost of care? A digital health strategy will answer your needs. At the heart of a digital health strategy is data trusted, secure data that can be accessed by everyone in the organization. To reach this level of maturity, organizations are starting to leverage governance to foster and deliver trusted data to their line of business data consumers.

Hyper-convergence is a oft-used buzzword now within health IT circles, especially as the advent of new technologies around flexible infrastructure continue to disrupt the marketplace. However, hyper-converged computing represents a unique area of opportunity for healthcare IT teams, especially in the face of demands from leadership for greater flexibility, and lower time-to-market for new built or merged facilities or locations. So what exactly is hyper-convergence and how does it fit into the IT roadmap?

The global community is generally aware of the existence of Intuitive’s da Vinci robot as a powerful and effective tool for a number of surgical procedures. But almost no one is aware that modern hospitals are actually using almost a dozen surgical robots right now and that more than fifty new robotic surgical devices are in the process of coming to market. We explore the breadth of all of these devices, create categories based on their capabilities, and identify important business impacts.

Healthcare is no place for slackers. It’s a fast-paced industry that ups the game every chance it gets. And that’s for good reason, of course, because when you’re in the business of saving lives, you expect a lot of yourself and everyone around you. Now it’s time to expect more from your healthcare informatics solutions. To make sure they’re intelligent and interoperable, intuitive and extensible, sound and secure, and more.

Healthcare informatics hold great promise for helping us deliver on many of healthcare’s boldest aspirations -- advanced analytics, decision support, streamlined workflows, seamless care, and most importantly, improved outcomes. But too often, we settle for far less than the full value these innovative solutions can provide. During this session, Paula Cobb will explore ways to put powerfully productive healthcare informatics to work for you.

Attempting to improve quality outcomes retrospectively has shown to be ineffective. Quality care is essential to improving outcomes and therefore a proactive approach is essential. In this session we demonstrate how moving from retro to real-time data analytics improved the opportunity for our clinicians to provide quality care. Learn how we combined real world clinical experiences with innovative architecture, while leveraging existing technology, to produce a near-time dashboard for nurses. This session goes beyond mere concept and shares practical applications of near and real-time reporting. We will share how we combined analytics and technology to save clinicians time while increasing the visibility of the quality of care being delivered, ultimately leading to improved outcomes.

The healthcare industry is not immune to consumerism.  Consumers today expect sophisticated service, more convenient access, personalized attention and transparency.  Healthcare systems are struggling to keep up with consumer expectations set by other industries.  Paying for healthcare service is both more complex and often more costly than other purchases.  Meanwhile, healthcare organizations have to keep up with fragmented data, regulatory constraints, and a complex technology landscape.  This creates a unique challenge to engage patients on their journey to find, choose, cover, and benefit from care. Join us to see how new digital channels, AI, and other advances are coming together to re-imagine the patient experience.

Tallahassee Memorial Hospital received a $500,000 grant to research and implement technology solutions that would improve care for Tallahassee’s homeless population and reduce strain on area emergency rooms. Lauren Faison , service line administrator for population health and telemedicine, will discuss how this program has been implemented and how this investment has already reduced costs of care by more than a million dollars.

Thanks to sophisticated electronic health records, we have more data on patients than ever before.  But it must be properly organized and interpreted to truly produce better outcomes.

At Nemours Children’s Health System, teams paired a top tier EHR with an innovative remote monitoring center to identify children at risk for becoming septic. The information allows providers to intervene before the child is harmed.

Nemours chief information officer, Bernie Rice shares the details on how this system was created and how it has helped Nemours deliver the safest possible care.

Innovator Awards Spotlight

Mark Binstock, Chief Medical Information Officer for Bon Secours Mercy Health System will be sharing the story of how Bon Secours Mercy paired an analytics platform with changes to EHR tools to reshape providers’ opioid prescribing behaviors. His team was recognized for their work in the Healthcare Innovation Innovator Awards program.

This session will focus on tools created as part of a broader data-driven approach  at Bon Secours Mercy Health that aimed to improve the identification of at-risk patients, encourage early treatment referrals, establish acute withdrawal protocols, and provide more efficient access to Ohio’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) database.

Findings highlight focus opportunities for technology investments toward what patients truly value.

Learning Objectives:

  • Provide an overview of the key findings and insights from the HIMSS Analytics Patient Experience Study
  • Understand the technology strategies providers are using to improve the patient experience and drive improved patient satisfaction
  • Share disparities between the reality of the patient experience and the provider perception of care
