Laurence J Heifetz, MD, FACP is the Medical Director of the Gene Upshaw Memorial Tahoe Forest Cancer Center. After completing his medical oncology training in 1979 at MD Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute in Houston, TX, he established his private practice at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA. Dr. Heifetz practiced there for 23 years, becoming a founding partner in the Tower Hematology Oncology Medical Group in Beverly Hills.
In 2003 he moved to Truckee, CA, as Medical Director of iKnowMed, an oncology EMR, and then President of Matrix Oncology, an oncology services company. In 2006, in response to the community’s clear-cut need for cancer care, he established an oncology program with the Tahoe Forest Hospital District. In 2012 the Gene Upshaw Memorial Tahoe Forest Cancer Center opened its 20,000 ft2 facility with integrated medical oncology and radiation oncology.
He is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the UC Davis School of Medicine, and helped develop the UC Davis Virtual Tumor Board Project with his associates in the UC Davis Cancer Care Network. In 2011, he published “A Model for Rural Oncology” in the Journal of Oncology Practice with his co-authors from the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center.
