Description

Historical trauma may be viewed as a legacy influencing health disparities, including co-occurring disorders. This training will include an overview of healthcare systems for American Indians and access to healthcare through existing policies. It will provide an overview of historical trauma and generational accounts of trauma that link past experiences to present day social, mental and physical health problems. This workshop will provide historical perspectives of colonization, cultural oppression, and problems of poverty and discrimination as important elements to understanding the health and social disparities facing Native Americans today. This workshop will identify ways that sensitively integrate western and indigenous practices in treatment. Acknowledging vulnerabilities and building resilience and cultural safety are factors in promoting recovery and wellbeing
