Dr. Groves is Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for Banner|Aetna, an insurance company in Arizona leveraging the strengths of the number one healthcare delivery organization in Arizona (Banner Health) along with a successful national insurance brand (Aetna). Each company is empowered to do what it does best via this joint venture, one of just a few of these transformative models across the nation.

He brings four decades of diverse experience across the health care ecosystem—including private and group practice, start-ups, large integrated delivery systems, and payer—to his role at Banner|Aetna. His clinical expertise, curiosity, and passion for improvement have guided the implementation of impactful health care technology and clinical programs that has expanded accessibility, reduced costs, and simplified care for members. Previously, he held leadership posts at Banner Health for 12 years, culminating in his position as the health system’s vice president of health management. There he led the development of one of the first ACO’s and guided it to becoming one of only nine ACO’s to finish all five performance years and demonstrating measurable improvements in quality and reduced health care costs.

Throughout his career, Dr. Groves has nurtured cutting-edge solutions like text-based primary care, VR-enhanced caregiver resources and AI-powered prior authorization that make it easier for members to get the care they need. He also championed the development of one of the largest and most successful tele-ICU systems in the country resulting in over 15,000 lives saved and $800 million in cost savings. Dr. Groves’ expertise is further validated by the impact of Banner|Aetna’s clinical initiatives like its diabetes reversal solution and its clinical engagement program, focused on the most vulnerable and complex members.

As a health care trend authority with unique perspective on both insurance and care delivery, Dr. Groves is a highly sought-after industry contributor. His speaking engagements include health system, payer and technology audiences at Cerner, IBM, Becker’s Healthcare, American Journal of Managed Care, the National Health Service, as well as U.S. News & World Report’s Future of Healthcare event. His work has been published in clinical journals such as Healthcare, Critical Care Clinics, the Journal of Intensive Care Medicine, Surgical Clinics of North America, and the Annals of Medicine and Surgery.

Organizations including Microsoft, CareCentra, and the Healthcare Management Academy rely on Dr. Groves’ insights as a trusted advisor and board member. He also serves as a speaker and educator for the American Heart Association. Dr. Groves received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia and trained and boarded in internal medicine, pulmonary diseases, and critical care medicine.
