Dr. John D. McGreevey III is a hospitalist at Penn Medicine. Board-certified in both internal medicine and clinical informatics, he is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. McGreevey cares for patients and teaches residents and medical students at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the Long Term Acute Care Hospital at the Penn Medicine at Rittenhouse site. He also serves as an Associate Chief Medical Information Officer for the University of Pennsylvania Health System. In this capacity, Dr. McGreevey has both strategic and operational leadership of PennChart, Penn Medicine’s integrated health information system based on the Epic suite of products that was implemented in 2016 and 2017. During the multiyear PennChart implementation, he served as an operational leader for the PennChart orders and clinical decision support team. During this transition, Dr. McGreevey and colleagues created a paradigm of modular order sets that Epic has adopted as its foundation content for all new customers. He has published on order sets, patient safety related to EHRs, and reducing alert burden for clinicians. Dr. McGreevey also served as local co-principal investigator for an FDA sponsored study assessing medication safety in CPOE. He has lectured about provider engagement in healthcare IT, meaningful use, EHR implementation, and health IT safety. In 2014, Dr. McGreevey became a Senior Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania Institute for Biomedical Informatics. He is a member of the ECRI Partnership for Health IT Patient Safety and currently co-chairs the 2020 Partnership workgroup on reducing alert burden for clinicians. A ten-year member of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA), he is currently serving a third 2-year term as a member of the AMIA Public Policy Committee. He has volunteered as a member of the scientific program committees for the 2018 AMIA annual symposium and the 2019 AMIA Clinical Informatics Conference and has been featured in the Faces of AMIA program. In 2019, AMIA recognized Dr. McGreevey’s commitment to clinical informatics with induction into the inaugural class of Fellows of AMIA. Dr. McGreevey successfully completed the AMIA 10x10 course in biomedical and health informatics with Oregon Health and Science University and the Short Course on Human Factors Engineering and Patient Safety at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. The recipient of multiple awards for operational programs that fundamentally improved quality and patient safety for patients, Dr. McGreevey was recognized by Penn Medicine for his leadership to advance health system integration with the 2017 Alfred P. Stengel Health System Champion Award.
Clinical informatics interests include strategy, implementation, clinical decision support, governance, interoperability, change management, and health informatics policy.
