A native of Barcelona, Catalonia, since 2006 Albert Oriol serves as VP of Information Management and CIO at Rady Children’s Hospital – San Diego. Prior to joining Rady Children’s Oriol held various IT leadership roles at The Children’s Hospital in Denver and at Sarasota Memorial Health Care System in Sarasota, Fla.

Oriol’s background and expertise center around IT strategy, organizational change management, project and portfolio management, IT quality assurance, process improvement/management engineering, technology infrastructure, interoperability, emerging technologies and innovation and information security and privacy. With over 20 years of IT leadership experience, Oriol has led large scale EMR implementations, IT infrastructure deployments, interoperability initiatives and rolled out state-of-the-art technology for new facilities and emerging medical fields, including genomics, telemedicine and remote sensors.

Oriol is a recognized healthcare professional who has taught IT strategy and management in healthcare organizations for the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (uoc.edu), the leading Catalan and Spanish online university.

An early CHIME Healthcare CIO Boot Camp™ alumnus, Oriol participates in various industry groups both in the US and abroad. Oriol serves on the Board of CHIME and CHIME Technologies, having chaired the 2013 CHIME Fall Forum Planning Committee and continuing to serve on CHIME’s Policy Steering Committee since its inception. In 2004 Oriol received CHIME’s John Glaser Scholarship Award and published “Sanidad en un Mundo Digital”, a book compiling his writings about healthcare in a digital World. Oriol also serves on the Board of San Diego Health Connect, the San Diego Regional Health Information Exchange and several advisory boards for US and European technology companies.

Oriol is fluent in English, Spanish and Catalan. He holds bachelor’s degrees in management from Bentley College and in economics and finance from Catalonia International College, as well as an MBA and a masters in health science from the University of Florida. Oriol was the recipient of a two-year ambassadorial scholarship from The Rotary Foundation.

In his spare time Oriol coaches youth rugby with San Diego OMBAC Wallabies and plays with an international rugby legends touring team, the KwaZulu Old Crocs.
