As Director, Industry Development, Stephen Anderson is responsible for tracking the photonics industry markets and technology to help define long-term strategy, while also facilitating development of SPIE’s industry activities. Before joining SPIE, Anderson was Associate Publisher and Editor in Chief of Laser Focus World and chaired the Lasers & Photonics Marketplace Seminar. Anderson also co-founded the BioOptics World brand. He holds a chemistry degree from the University of York and an Executive MBA from Golden Gate University.

An independent consultant advising photonics companies doing business in China and Asia, Dr. Gu has worked for 25 years in small, mid-, and large laser companies in the US and China, including IPG Photonics, GSI Group, and Resonetics. From 2008 to 2011, he was the director of IPG Asia operations and general manager of IPG China, responsible for developing Asian and Chinese markets. He became the first foreign national elected to become a vice president of the Chinese Optical Society Laser Processing Committee in 2010, and deputy secretary-general of COS in 2017.
Chuck Mattera, PhD

Dr. Vincent (Chuck) Mattera has been CEO of II-VI Incorporated since September 2016. He joined the company as vice president in 2004, and assumed increasingly responsible executive positions, including as a lead architect of the company’s diversification strategy and overseeing acquisition-related integration activities in the US, Europe, and Asia. These activities have contributed to a new positioning of II-VI in large and transformative global growth markets while increasing the global reach of the company, deepening the technology and IP portfolio, and broadening the product roadmap and customer base. Before joining II-VI, Dr. Mattera had a 20-year career in the Optoelectronic Device Division of AT&T Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies, and Agere Systems, during which he led the development and manufacturing of semiconductor laser-based materials and devices for optical and data communications networks. He has a BS in chemistry from the University of Rhode Island, a PhD in chemistry from Brown University, and has completed the Stanford University Executive Program.

Andy Mattes joined Coherent in April 2020 and serves as CEO and President as well as a member of the Board. Previously, he was a Senior Advisor to McKinsey & Company and an independent corporate advisor. From 2013 through 2017, he was CEO and a member of the board of Diebold Nixdorf, a retail and financial services technology systems company, and, before that, was a Senior Vice President at Violin Memory, a computer storage systems company. Mattes held several executive management positions with Hewlett-Packard Enterprise Services and spent the first 20 years of his career at Siemens, holding a variety of senior leadership positions, culminating in his role as CEO of Siemens Communications USA. He received his Diplom-Kaufmann in business administration from Ludwig Maximilan University.

He has more than 25 years of experience in the photonics and electronics industry in hardware and software development, in addition to semiconductor market analysis. In the past, Nogee has been a Research Director and Principal Analyst at In-Stat, where he tracked RF semiconductors, cellular infrastructure, and wireless technologies. Mr. Nogee is President of Laser Markets Research (Scottsdale, AZ), and has an MBA from Arizona State University and a Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Electrical Engineering from Rochester Institute of Technology.

Jennifer O’Bryan is the Government Affairs Director for SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, and Chair of the Sensors and Instrumentation Technical Advisory Committee (SITAC) within the US Department of Commerce. She works with industry representatives to develop proposals to make needed changes to international export control regulations through submission to the Wassenaar Arrangement. Before joining SPIE, O’Bryan worked as a congressional aid to two senior members of the U.S. Congress, where she advised on technology, defense, and appropriations policy.

As President of Ceres Technology Advisors, Linda Smith provides merger and acquisition advisory services to photonics companies. She is well-known for her role in identifying opportunities in optics and laser markets. She held founding and leadership roles at early stage, venture capital financed companies commercializing photonics technologies, as well as marketing and sales management positions at Thermo Electron/Spectra Physics and LINOS Photonics/Qioptiq. She is an Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA) in business valuation and passed FINRA Series 79 Registered Investment Banking Representative exam. Linda Smith holds a BS in Optics and Mathematics from the University of Rochester and MBA from Babson College.
