As Ferguson Anniversary Approaches, Behavioral Healthcare Response Takes Center Stage

Media Interviews Available at National Conference Next Week in St. Louis

New York, N.Y., July 30th, 2015—The National Conference on Addiction Disorders has organized a panel of local experts to explore how individual behavioral healthcare providers can be a catalyst for healing when communities are in turmoil.

We have all watched as Baltimore, Ferguson, New York City, Cleveland, Los Angeles, and other cities across the country reacted to the deaths of Freddie Gray, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, and others.  During the sometimes violent protests, often lost in the national discussion is the long-term impact of trauma on communities.

In this significant plenary panel discussion—The Provider's Role in Addressing Community Trauma—taking place Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at the historic St. Louis Union Station Hotel, an expert panel of local and national behavioral healthcare leaders will address important—and often neglected—issues, specially exploring how individual behavioral healthcare providers can be a catalyst for healing when communities are in turmoil.

Moderated by Gary Enos, Editor of Addiction Professional, this discussion will draw upon the experience and insight of its remarkable panel of local experts, including: Dr. Marva Robinson, Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Preston & Associates Psychology Firm, LLC (St. Louis, MO); Rev. F. Willis Johnson Jr., D. Min., Wellspring Church (Ferguson, MO); and Dr. Christi M. Griffin, Founder and President, The Ethics Project (St. Louis, MO).  Among other key points, the panel will focus on understanding: the long-term impact of trauma on communities; how an individual provider can be involved in healing communities; and how behavioral healthcare providers can be a catalyst for change in a recovery-oriented system of care.

Known for the power chords that came to define Joan Jett and the Blackhearts’ platinum cover of I Love Rock & Roll, Ricky Byrd—who has achieved 27 years of sobriety and has toured with numerous rock bands—will be delivering a keynote address entitled, Rockin for Recovery: A Man and His Guitar, at this year’s National Conference on Addiction Disorders and Behavioral Healthcare Leadership Summit. Ricky saw the reactions that the music was getting and Ricky went on to start the Clean Getaway Band and Foundation and now works at Sunrise Detox. Experts discuss the implications of legalizing or decriminalizing recreational marijuana use

NEW YORK / AUGUST 22, 2013 / -- A panel of experts will discuss the implications of legalizing or decriminalizing recreational marijuana use in Orange County, CA, on September 24. The engaging debate will be part of the National Conference on Addiction Disorders at the Anaheim Marriott, September 21-25.

In 2012, Colorado and Washington became the first states to adopt voter-approved initiatives to legalize possession of small amounts of marijuana and to regulate the drug similar to the regulation of alcohol. Are similar initiatives coming to other states, and what are the implications for marijuana use trends in communities and for addiction treatment programs? Panelists on both sides of the legalization issue, including those who have worked directly on marijuana legalization and medical marijuana debates at the state and national levels, will discuss what it would mean to change current marijuana prohibition policies.

Panelists include:

  • Ben Cort, Board Member of Project SAM (Smart Approaches to Marijuana); Business Development Team Member, Center for Dependency, Rehabilitation and Recovery (CeDAR) in Colorado. Cort played a large role in the ultimately unsuccessful effort to defeat Colorado’s Amendment 64 that legalized recreational marijuana use.

  • Amanda Reiman, California Policy Manager, Drug Policy Alliance. Reiman served as the first chairwoman of the Medical Cannabis Commission for the city of Berkeley, California, and has consulted with various cities and states on the development of medical marijuana policy.

  • Kevin Sabet, Director, Drug Policy Institute and Assistant Professor, University of Florida College of Medicine, Division of Addiction Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, President, Policy Solutions Group, Inc. From 2009 to 2011,  Sabet served in the Obama Administration as Senior Advisor at the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP).

The discussion will be moderated by Addiction Professional magazine Editor-in-Chief Gary Enos, the country’s longest-serving journalist in the addiction treatment field.

Complimentary media passes are available in advance. Contact Nadine Harris-Daly at 212-812-1419 or nharris-daly@vendomegrp.com. Pre-event interviews with Addiction Professional Publisher Doug Edwards, Editor-in-Chief Gary Enos, or panelists are available.
