For those who design and deploy the infrastructure systems that are the foundation for building intelligence, this session will provide insight into the depth of testing that should now be performed, beyond just cable certification. We will discuss extended measurements defined in ANSI/TIA 1152-A that should be made as part of cable certification, as well as extended measurements of link speed, and different types of network-based power that support IoT connected devices. Projects are evaluated based on their demonstration of innovative and successful sustainable and resilient design principles, systems integration, IT and OT technologies, and measures to support the health and well-being of their occupants and beyond.
The recipient of the first-ever SBOTY Award is the PAE Living Building, in Portland, Ore. Realized through a developer-led funding model, the five-story, 58,000-square-foot mixed-use building is designed to last 500 years through its strategic design, which integrates smart systems to monitor its energy and water independence, a seismic-resilient structure, durable and nontoxic materials, and biophilic, nature-inspired design principles. Additionally, the PAE Living Building benefits the surrounding community, contributing renewable energy to a nearby affordable housing project. The project’s key players include developer Edlen & Co., ZGF Architects, Walsh Construction Co., and MEP engineer and technology designer PAE.

3:00 PM - 4:00 PM (EST) | Smart buildings aren’t growing in popularity because they’re the next big thing in construction—they’re becoming prolific because of their ability to respond to changes in the way we work, live and play. This session looks at the biggest drivers behind smart buildings—from remote work and well-being to sustainability and data aggregation for smarter decision-making—and why the smart buildings of the future need to address these issues first and foremost. But there are many nuances and intricacies to consider when bringing smart buildings to life—from codes and standards and greenfield and brownfield development to the distinctions between data acquisition and transmission and data orchestration and management. Using checklists and standardized assessments like LEED, SPIRE™ and WiredScore are good starting points, but they’re only one of many steps in providing meaningful solutions. It’s time to toss your cookie-cutter checklists and instead focus on using a TEAM (telecommunications, electrical, architectural and mechanical) approach to create smart buildings that put user needs and problem-solving front and center. Deploying network integration, IoT and automation to create greater efficiency, powerful experiences and reduce costs and risks looks different for every organization.
