Fernando Leyva has more than 20 years of healthcare experience as a physician and healthcare executive. He has led healthcare organizations in a wide variety of hospital and clinic settings with a focus on healthcare transformation to meet current and future generations, quality improvement, and aligning staff meaningfully to processes and strategy. He currently serves as the Chief Medical Officer for a complex, multi-service Marine Corps Command where he is responsible for medical strategy, policy, patient safety, clinical quality, and staff credentials. Prior to this role, he was the Director of Medical Services for the Navy’s largest hospital where he led a multi-service medical group of 13 specialty and sub-specialty departments and 8 physician-training programs during the 2020-21 global pandemic and a hospital-wide transition to a new electronic health record system. In addition to working in traditional healthcare settings, he has practiced medicine and managed medical assets while deployed across the globe in support of Navy operations, participated in global health engagements, and developed healthcare policy at Navy Medicine Headquarters in Washington, DC.
Dr. Leyva is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He completed residency training at Naval Hospital Pensacola and earned his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He holds an MS from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington and BS from Davidson College. He maintains board certification in Family Medicine and is active in the American College of Healthcare Executives.
