Traditionally, the capacity capability of the grid has been increased by replacing heavy assets such as substation equipment, overhead conductors, and underground cables. These types of projects ignore the unused capacity of the existing grid assets, require large investments, and involve years of planning and development. As electric grids across the globe become increasingly congested and constrained due to shifts in generation and in peak demand, utilities need to respond to new points of congestion at high speed while maintaining high reliability and low costs for the energy consumer. The Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) of a transmission or distribution line is the actual current carrying capacity based on direct measurements of the conductor’s thermal state and surrounding weather conditions. Typically, the DLR of a line is between 10 – 50% higher than its static rating. Belgian's Transmission System Operator (Elia) has been using dynamic line ratings for over five years with both real-time and P98 forecasts fully integrated into operations and planning. North American utilities are now following suit with full operational integrations.
