Description

Modern and future grid applications require a new level of deterministic communications performance. In this session, learn how by leveraging the basics of Passive Optical Networks (PON), ComEd is transforming grid communications by pioneering new technology that incorporates expedited and deterministic redundancy into its fiber-based PON. These new networks were purposely designed for utility applications where all requirements are measured in 'extremes.' Redundant PON is capable of extremely low latencies, extremely high (bandwidth) throughput, and extremely fast fail-over times. Leveraging ComEd's large fiber optic cable infrastructure, redundant PON takes it to the next level by enabling very efficient use of the fiber optic plant while maintaining very favorable space and power characteristics both at the PON aggregation center (head-end) and at the field distributed endpoints.
