As service providers, cable MSOs and telcos, look at upcoming 25G and 50G PON implementations, the question becomes what are the architectural models to consider for achieving cost-effective network deployments? PON is coming on strong for Cable Access, but there are legitimate questions about technology choices to start, methods to evolve through one to the other, and use cases.  In this presentation we talk about the different flavor of technologies, and the deployment aspect that is unique to cable access, including operational cycles for outside plant remote OLTs.  Finally we discuss how PON can be used to maintain and gain back residential customers and beyond residential, how to grow segments of business services where MSO's are not dominant.  This use cases description will allow network planners to assess decisions early in the PON planning stages toward a stable long lasting optical access network.
